I had a bad cramp in my calf muscle – Oleksiy Kasyanov

Having earned 2093 points to Ukraine after three events, the host’s team leader Oleksiy Kasyanov announced his discontinue due to injury-threatening cramp.

“I had a bad cramp in my calf muscle. I felt like I could do nothing about it and decided to discontinue because of high risk of getting a more complicated injury which may require prolonged recovery. I think it sounds reasonable to be careful right now so that I could go on later this year. I was driving for five straight hours when I got here six days ago. And then I had a muscle cramp during my warming up. I did hope it would be ok, just couldn’t believe those senseless things might happen to me. However, it didn’t go.Unfortunately, it didn’t.

I am an athlete, I am always eager to take maximum advantage of my preparation practice. That’s why I wanted to stay on field after long jump to do my shot put. Left leg is not involved in shot put technique that much and I just tried to be on the safe side with my left leg.

The Ukraine team is doing quite well. The guys are very solid and committed. It’s a great pleasure to feel that atmosphere. I do regret to discontinue.

There is plenty of decathlon routine which does not involve running. I will keep on practicing and hopefully will compete in decathlon at Ukraine Championships in a month and a half”.
